WHATSOEVER!

‘And whatsoever you do, in words or in deeds, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him- Colossians 3:17

That word caught my attention while reading that verse recently and still gets my attention every time I read it. The Bible says ‘Whatsoever’ and it really means ‘Whatsoever’ which could also directly mean ‘Anything’.

So using ‘Anything’ in place of ‘Whatsoever’, I guess, we should see the full picture of that verse- ‘And anything you do’.

Wow! Anything I do summates to ‘Everything I do’ actually, which means ‘In everything I do, in words or in deeds, I should do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God..’

Being a practical example of someone who actually just did some things a day before yesterday not in the name of the Lord Jesus or to His glory. I now understand (thanks to His word), that I must not just stop at doing some things to His glory but I must strive (by His grace which is sufficient) to do everything for His glory even when it means that these things may need me to sacrifice my time, my comfort, my strength, my desires, my life for the sake of someone else and the sake of the kingdom, still I will do it all in his name, being grateful to God.

When we serve, we either serve God or we serve people and the truth is that in serving people, you in turn serve God because as a Christian, our lives are to be consecrated to Him alone. Our true life lies in Christ.

Our attitude while we do it.

This really matters too. It is important that we do all things to his glory but it matters also how we do it because this will determine if it is truly for God’s glory.

‘And whatsoever you do, do it HEARTILY, as to the Lord and not unto men; Colossians 3:23

The first right attitude in doing things is to do it heartily not grumbly, not idly or slothfully but with diligence; to do it with an understanding of gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve Him. God desires that we serve Him with joy. Joy is required in serving God ‘for the Joy of the Lord is truly our strength’. Let not the devil sap away your joy, for it will weaken you and your service to God. It is necessary to also have an humble mind (which has not placed others below yourself and you above others) because in doing so, you will be able to mortify the desires of ‘SELF’ (self- importance, self-worship e.t.c) and be able to serve God with gladness in any position/ state you are in or in any role you are asked to play.

Secondly, another attitude we should have while doing things is to serve as though we serve God and not men. It truly sanctifies a servant’s work when it is done unto God and not merely as unto men. A substance needed here is the Fear of God. The fear of God ruling in your heart enables you to do all thing heartily and with an humble mind for you understand that men who watch are not those who will reward/judge you and even if they did, it will be temporary but you have a Spectator (whom you desire to please) who is greater than the other spectators and is concerned about how you do things i.e. everything you do, and will judge/reward you for everything you do both in words or deeds.

Finally, Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.  For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. Colossians 3:24-25

May God bless you as you seek to do all things to His glory. May His word be hidden in your heart that you may not sin against Him.

Knowing this is not by your power or strength but by the grace and strength that he provides, I urge you to pray to God about these needs/weaknesses and ask for his

help.
